On ‘Delfts Blauw: Framing at the Ethnographic Museum’

This illustration is part of an ongoing visual research project concerning ethnographic museum collections; displaying and representing the “other”; the attempts and (im)possibility of decoloniality inside the museum. Here we see a 19th Century birth ritual dance mask belonging to the Baining of Papua New Guinea, on display at the Wereld Museum (World Museum) in Rotterdam as part of the exhibition POWERMASK, 2018. In the illustration, the mask is metaphorically framed by a Dutch Delftware pottery pattern, originally inspired by Chinese porcelain that was imported to Europe in the 16th Century.
