We are thrilled to announce our next jfa event, Susana Girón: Documenting a Pandemic, will take place on 10 April at 10am BST!
After the conclusion of our first workshop series on Storytelling Basics, we have decided to continue bringing you outstanding professionals to discuss the work that they do in these strange, absurd and - dare we say it - unprecedented times.
Susana Girón is a Spanish photojournalist who works casting a light on the importance of the quotidian. From the start of the pandemic, she has been part of a team of eight Spanish photojournalists who have been reporting on the impact of COVID-19 across the country, every day, representing the lives that we live now as well as the extraordinary moment we are going through. As an innovative digital journalism project, COVID PHOTO DIARIES (@covidphotodiaries) has used the tools and reach available through social media to share the stark, contrasting realities of life in a pandemic that has not been a great equaliser. Spain went into one of the strictest lockdowns in Europe on 14 March 2020, relaxed regulations during the summer season and has now seen over 70,000 deaths. COVID PHOTO DIARIES is supported by Doctors of the World Spain and DKV and Canon, and has been featured across national and international media, including The New York Times and RTVE.
During this hour-long event, Susana will present the work she has done for COVID PHOTO DIARIES, reflect on the importance of the work of photojournalists in a moment like this and discuss the challenges that are presented through this task. This event will be in Spanish, accompanied with live English translation. The presentation will be followed by a conversation and open discussion.
The session will take place on Zoom and is open to anyone, everywhere. We particularly want to encourage participation from people who may be structurally marginalised, are struggling to break into documentary photography, photojournalism or are keen to pursue unique storytelling projects.
